چکیده

Mastitis remains the most expensive disease of dairy cows, and antibiotic dry cow therapy (DCT) at dry-off is an important part mastitis control. Regardless infection status, blanket DCT administered to all quarters which controversial due worldwide problem antimicrobial resistance. Even though selective only infected cows a more sustainable approach, choosing animals for treatment not always straightforward. Our aim was evaluate whether herd-level approach associated with early lactation udder health problems, taking into account characteristics. Dairy Cow Welfare & Udder Health

Introduction Maintaining consumers trust is essential to ensure the future of the dairy industry. Production of high quality milk from healthy, well cared for animals is the goal of most dairy farmers. However, as fewer and fewer consumers are familiar with dairy farming, they have become more skeptical about the ability of farmers to properly care for farm animals. Public attention about the w...

Cow, farm, and herd management factors in the dry period associated with raised somatic cell counts in early lactation.

This study investigated cow characteristics, farm facilities, and herd management strategies during the dry period to examine their joint influence on somatic cell counts (SCC) in early lactation. Data from 52 commercial dairy farms throughout England and Wales were collected over a 2-yr period. For the purpose of analysis, cows were separated into those housed for the dry period (6,419 cow-dry...

Risk factors associated with bacteriological cure, new infection, and incidence of clinical mastitis after dry cow therapy with three different antibiotics

Factors affecting bacteriological cure rates (BCR) and new intramammary infections (IMI) during the dry period as well as clinical mastitis (CM) during early lactation were investigated in 414 German Holstein dairy cows receiving dry cow therapy. Cows were treated with either benethamine benzylpenicillin (300,000 IU), penethamate hydriodide (100,000 IU), and framycetin sulphate (100 mg, n = 136...

Potential of fine milk composition for cow udder health management

The objective of this research was to investigate the potential of mid-infrared (MIR) analysis of milk to provide indicators of the udder health status of dairy cows. Mastitis data collected in 49 Walloon herds were merged with test-day data including milk composition and MIR spectra. A total of 1987 healthy lactation and 3204 lactations with at least one mastitis, clinical or sub-clinical, chr...

Economic aspects of dry cow therapy

Dry cow therapy has been part of mastitis control since the 1970s and has been one point of the five point scheme. In many countries many, if not most, dairy farmers apply dry cow therapy as part of their farm specific mastitis control plan. The general advice in the five point plan is that all cows, at drying off, should be treated with a specific long acting antibiotic formulation the blanket...
